Tomar - NEW Everything a traveller needs to know Tomar

1 / 14

Overview

For a traveller more than a tourist. Yes, you'll explore the wonderful UNESCO World Heritage Convent of Christ and Tomar Castle, that's a given. But this tour gets into the nooks and crannies and the people who died building it.

There is a lot of bloodshed, death and hidden horror in Tomar's history, it was built by soldiers. The Saint murdered for love, the massacre of Jews, wars, battles, adventure, great armies, crusades and grief. It's not just pretty windows in churches, although there are a few of those too.

I will point out places to visit after we part too, museums, restaurants, bars. You'll enhance your time with all my shortcuts.

My tour is like walking around a city with a friend telling you why he loves his home so much. And if you don't laugh then I'll give you your money back.

What to expect

  1. Synagogue of Tomar

    10 min

The Synagogue of Tomar, built in the 15th century, stands as a testament to the vibrant Jewish community that once thrived there. It's one of Portugal's oldest surviving synagogues, featuring Mudejar-style architecture with intricate geometric designs. Despite its small size, it exudes grandeur and cultural significance, reflecting the rich history of Sephardic Jews in the region. Today, it serves as a museum, offering visitors insight into Jewish heritage and medieval Portuguese history.

  2. Castelo de Tomar

    30 min

The Castle of Tomar, located in Portugal, is a stunning example of medieval architecture. Constructed in the 12th century by the Knights Templar, it served as their headquarters. Its strategic position atop a hill offers commanding views of the surrounding landscape. The castle features robust walls, towers, and a keep, showcasing both military might and religious symbolism. Over the centuries, it underwent expansions and modifications, blending various architectural styles. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inviting visitors to explore its rich history and impressive fortifications.

  3. 1 hour

The Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was originally a Templar stronghold in Tomar, Portugal. Founded in the 12th century, it evolved into a vast complex combining Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles. The centerpiece is the Charola, a unique round church with Templar symbols. Its architecture and history symbolize Portugal's role in the Age of Discovery. Today, it stands as a remarkable testament to medieval architecture and the Templar legacy.

  4. Roda do parque do Mouchao

    15 min

The Roda Hidráulica do Mouchão in Tomar, Portugal, is a historic hydraulic water wheel dating back to the 17th century. Located in the picturesque Mouchão Park, it served as part of the city's irrigation system, harnessing the power of the Nabão River to supply water to the surrounding areas. The wheel, made of wood and iron, stands as a testament to Portugal's engineering ingenuity of the time. Today, it's a charming symbol of Tomar's rich history and is a popular spot for visitors to admire and photograph.

  5. Aqueduto dos Pegoes

    20 min

Engineering Marvel: This impressive 17th-century aqueduct stretches 6 km and supplied water to the Convent of Christ.
This is 2km walk added on to the tour. I'm very willing to take whoever wants to see it, but if it's a bridge too far you can give it a miss and finish in the Convent, it's your call.
